Food and the Voice | Octave Higher TV E3

Happy Thanksgiving!

Episode 3 is based off a great question by Nigel Clark.

When we first started working together, he asked when I was going to ask him to stop drinking coffee.

This led to a great question for this holiday week: How does food affect the voice?

Episode Recap: How does food affect the voice?

-Food/Drink affects the voice on two levels

-One is at the vocal fold level

-The second affects the stomach and body as a whole

-Food/Drink can affect the vocal folds very quickly and acutely. Like smoking or drinking alcohol.

-You also want to avoid foods that will increase the PH of your stomach which makes it more acidic

Avoid away from sugar, dairy and grains right before singing

-Drink lots of water or sparkling water if you’re craving an alcoholic beverage right before you sing

Keep the Song Special | Octave Higher TV E1

Welcome to Octave Higher TV.

Episode 1 is based on great question by student Matt Davis.

He asks: Do you ever lose that special thing you love about a song through practice?

RECAP:

Question: Do you ever lose that special thing you love about a song through practice?

-Great performance is about sharing the special things that YOU love about a song with OTHERS

-It’s incredibly hard to share the songs you love in an authentic way unless you practice them an insane amount.

-Ultimately, you have to decide who you’re performing for.

-Are you having a two sided conversation with your audience, or are you just talking to yourself?

-Voice lessons are a great way to practice the songs you love
